So I was bored today and I know how much Matt has enjoyed his Arduino board, so I decided I’d give it a go. The first project is just a little blinking LED. Well that got me thinking about all the fun possibilities you can use a blinking LED for, and I thought it would be cool to make it say SOS…everyone knows the Morse Code for SOS, a simple dot dot dot, dash dash dash, dot dot dot, so it’s easily recognizable. Well then once I figured out how to code that, I thought “How fun would it be to be able to say ANYTHING with my lovely little blinking LED?” And this fun little project was born!
I coded every letter and number in Morse code so that all you have to do is change the letters in the loop function to make it say whatever you want! This is the first thing I’ve ever coded, and if i do say so myself, I think it’s pretty awesome!
Feel free to download the code to use for yourself, and check out my YouTube video saying “Hello World”!
This morning I go out to find my car frosted over. A very clear reminder that winter is coming soon! I thought I would share with you the winter scene on the roof of my car. The twisted line to the right reminded me fine weld on a car’s inter structure. The ripples made me think of ripples of water frozen in time. Old man winter is using my car as his canvas!
My wife, my friend David and I went to the Fort Boonesboro Hammer In Blacksmith event yesterday. We got a chance to watch a team of blacksmiths put together hardware for a wooden box. It was nice to see people practicing an age old trade. It’s not often that you run into someone that calls themselves a blacksmith. It is a dieing art. My friend David Poff is trying his best to learn the skills of the trade. He hopes someday to be able to make Mid-evil armor and swords. After watching some of the work being done, I too took an interest in learning more about the trade. Dave has been taking some blacksmith courses offered by Berea College. I think I might tag along to his next lesson. Read the rest of this entry »

Arcade Expressionism - Laser Bread
I was going through my blog roll today to get some ideas for new content. Then I stumbled across an entry on one of my favorite tech blogs. It was some 8-bit artwork. I thought I would share a piece. This piece is an expressionism painting of the popular arcade game Donkey Kong. Very creative stuff.
So I decided to learn more about the artist. The blog linked to their Flickr. I elected to take a look. I found some very interesting stuff. Their Flickr profile is called ‘Laser Bread.’ I favorite a continuing set on ‘Make Something Cool Everyday 2009.’ As you guess, the artist post some new work daily for a year. I struggle to keep producing work for this blog. I couldn’t imagine what it takes to think of something creative everyday. This truly inspires me! Be sure to check it out! Hopefully we’ll see a new set for 2010!
This weekend we celebrated our friend Bobby Dorris’ birthday. His fiance Shawna Carlson (author of Shawna Carlson Presents) made him a special cake. All I can say is “Ooh La La.” As you can see from the pictures below, it features a woman’s bust in a skimpy outfit. Shawna, Catie and my wife Heather have been taking a cake decorating class. Looks like they’ve learned some interesting techniques!
A group on Flickr called “LUGNuts” is hosting a Lego vehicle building challenge. The challenge features works honoring great automotive designers. Some of the submitted Lego builds include works from Ed “Big Daddy” Roth, Tom Daniels and George Barris. I’m a big fan of works from all these designers. I can remember watching my brother putting model kits together of some of the cars featured. I am extremely impressed with the works of art already submitted. If I get time I will try to submit something myself. Below are the rules and link to access the group’s challenge.
To succeed in this challenge, you should…well, build a car, truck, or bike as always. But this time, you should also state the real name of the great designer you are honoring somewhere in your write up. That is vitally important! Just posting some generic car with no explanation at all will either be deleted or, in case you haven’t caught on to it, will be ripped on mercilessly during the blog round up. Got it? Good! You may choose any of the designers I have mentioned or discover one on your own. Making one up or citing yourself as a brilliant designer is not a good idea. While some of us Lego builders have enjoyed a certain amount of fame, lets not choose a Lego artist as your inspiration…not for this challenge anyway. Just like last month, I have set up two strings simultaneously. This one is for photo entries and short write ups ONLY, while the other is for your ideas, questions, comments, concerns and any other babble you want to talk about.
Today is the 1st of August, you have until September 1st…one month to post your creations here. Post one, or post many. Build in any scale whether it be micro, minifig, mainland or beyond. Lets honor our great automotive heroes! Who knows…maybe someday if you’re lucky…and good at what you do, your chosen hero may eventually see your creation.. That would be awesome! Oh, and as always…happy building!
Thought I would share this with you. My only question is, “Will they stop following him once he powers up?” What if your favorite video game characters joined twitter? Mario on Twitter! Scott Hampson has some more of these great cartoons on his blog at http://twit-ha.tumblr.com
